Protecting the environment is the
duty of every individual. Human activities have proven to be the greatest
threat to the environment. Everyone has the right to healthy environment but due
to the human wants the healthy environment has been slowly depleting.
Mangaluru the hub of floura, fauna
and wildlife is now the ignorant plight of exploitation. The added beauty and
the balancing cycle of the Western Ghats is now surrounded by major
environmental issues. The village of Jokatte has been showered
with soot emitted from the Coke and Sulphur manufacturing unit of MRPL. This
shower has not only affected humans but the vegetations as well.
The soot has
been creating problems to the locals creating skin related disorders. Due to
the monsoon the soot has been mixed with the water bodies making it impossible
for the locals to consume this water. The soot showering on the vegetation has
also affected the local farmers. This has created lot of agitation in the
public.
The Public
has been continuously protesting against the extended Coke and Sulphur unit of
MRPL. The Corridor road construction of MRPL and SEZ, Wind break construction has
been stopped in this area due to the continuous protest. Though the orders are
passed to stop manufacturing of coke and sulphur the soot shower has been proof
to the work in progress behind the closed doors. Which is the all the act of
falling on deaf ears. In the initial stage the company had been neglecting the woes
of the public; the constant protest has lead to some minor reforms to be taken
place.
The
pollution control committee has sent the notice thrice to these Companies. A
committee of experts comprising NITK professor Dr. Shriniketan has been constituted
to investigate the source of pollution and to provide suitable measure in this
regards.
The permit granted by the pollution control committee to the MRPL has already been expired and this committee has stopped the renewal of the license. Yet the manufacturing process has been continuing illegally. Neither the District Administration nor the committee has taken any action to stop this illegal manufacturing.
