Death of Waters

Kerala is a traditionally rich and culturally beautiful state of India. The greenery and abundant variety of species marks the importance of this coastal strip. The most beautiful feature of this small state is the 44 tremendously flowing rivers. The land was blessed with the natural supply of fresh water from these rivers. But this fact seems to be ended in the state. Along with the development and industrialization which are meant to be positive factors of a countries growth, the state tends to lose whole of its natural sources along with these rivers.


In a recent study by Aravind ES on ‘Various lakes in Kerala and Environmental Issues’ he explains the splendidness of the rivers which they had in the state and how the common people simply look helpless before these dying lakes and rivers. The major rivers of Kerala include Periyar, Bharathapuzha, Pamba, Chalakuduipuzha etc. and the lakes such as Ashtamudi Lake, Vembanad Lake, Vellayan Lake etc.

These natural sources are being destroyed and contaminated to a great extent. The growing sector of industrialization prefers their plot near a river, not because of the beauty and greenery but for the easier disposal of wastes produced by their industries. Large quantity of untreated sewage, chemicals such as aluminum, ceramics are major constituents of every water body in Kerala. 
The Government or state authority allows construction and functioning of such industries in the name of development, which not only is killing the fresh rivers, but also harming the human and animal life nearby.

Apart from industrialization, each individual does their part in contaminating the waters of the state. Human excreta are another major pollutant seen in these rivers. Besides, people are used to throwing unwanted things like plastic bags, wrappers etc. into the rivers. These rivers are literally being treated as waste dumping areas by humans.


Kerala is also well known for fishing. The boats which work on fuels expel a great amount of oil into the water which is a major pollutant again. All these practices not only leads to the death of the rivers but will also kill the life under the water such as fish and aquatic plants. The water is turned into highly unsuitable state where these fishes cannot even spawn.

If this is the case of a small state in India; the situation of the whole country will not be different. Though India is rich in natural resources we lack the impulse to protect and conserve them. Humans are protected by nature and environment which calls us to protect them too. Each individual should feel the need of conserving the rich gifts which nature offers us.

Media the Voice for environment

In the name of development we have encroached the forest, lakes and waterways and what not?  When too much of human activities are conducted against nature it goes in its course be that Kashmir flood, incident in Kedarnath region 2013 or tsunami, cyclones and all types of natural calamities throughout the world. Bees and wraps administration
