The Tiger Lake- Pilikula


Those who are looking for a spot to enjoy must make sure to the destination of Pilikula. It is a stairway to the nature’s version of heaven on earth. Located in Mangalore, Karnataka about 30 minutes away from Mangalore city, this place has a lot to reveal. It is part of culture and heritage.
The name Pilikula itself is an evidence of its interconnection with nature. Pilikula literally means pond of tigers. In tulu language ‘pili’ means ‘tiger’ and ‘kula’ means ‘lake’. In older days tigers used to come to this lake to drink water. That’s how the zoo got its name.



It interests people who are looking for scenic beauty and peace. But nowadays endangered animals like tigers are rarely seen in the zoo. The tiger’s population is declining very fast. Many of the forest and zoos are empty. Though the authority has different laws regarding the protection of animals, people turn a deaf ear against it.

Every year July 29 is observed as the ‘International Tigers Day’. We celebrate this day not just for the sake of celebration but to urge people and get a worldwide attention to protect the tigers. At present there are only four tigers, and we have to ensure the survival of these endangered animals. Human activities are threatening their survival. Deforestation and hunting of animals has caused decrease in the number of this rich species. The weather condition is changing making it difficult for them to survive.

The upcoming international ‘Tigers Day’ reminds us of the need to protect and expand tigers habitats and to gain support through the awareness for tigers conservation.
Here comes the importance of Pilikula where there is a zoo hosting several wild animals like elephants, birds, tigers, lions and so on. The specialty of this zoo is that the animals are not kept in the cages. Rather they are placed in an open arena where animals can enjoy their freedom much like the life in the jungle. This system gains wide support, people from across the country came to visit the place.

It is a spot for the attractions of educational, scientific and cultural interest in the surrounding habitat and to others. The need to protect and preserve these animals is indispensable not only for the spot of attraction but also for educational purpose.
